Let's call these "The Object Lesson". It could be classified as glass wind chimes.

If you have doubts about putting a set of your wind chimes outside, here's a pictorial cautionary tale.

I don't have any before pictures of this one, but you can see that the "after" ain't that pretty.

So, when in doubt, don't hang it out!

Inside Beauty Or Outside Bliss?

Outdoor wind chimes can just as easily be used as indoor wind chimes, and visa versa.

Outdoor rooms  need jewelry, too. Wind chimes make fabulous gazebo accessories.

You can usually tell right away if the piece is rugged enough to be outside all year, or only when the weather is good.

The wind chimes in the image above were beautiful once. I was so proud because I made them myself. You should have seen me. What a sense of accomplishment!

Against my better judgement, I put them outside to show them off. Even though they were clearly an indoor piece.

They're not so beautiful anymore. I still love them. And they're unique, right on, but they have definitely lost some of the original sparkle.

So hang a delicate piece outside where the breeze isn’t too strong and hang it indoors in bad weather. Or use your most delicate wind chimes exclusively indoors. Saving the sturdiest chimes for outside.

The most popular wind chimes are made of aluminum, stainless steel, copper and brass because they're the most durable.

But acrylic, mylar laminate, and wood are also pretty rugged.

Glass, ceramic, and seashells can be more fragile. But wind chimes made with heavier glass can do as well outside as any metal or wood.

Actually, all of these materials are good choices for both indoor and outdoor wind chimes.

But when deciding where to use it, don't just focus on what it's made of. Also think about how it's made.

And remember, if your wind chimes will hang indoors -- anything goes.
