Outdoor Security Lighting
How To Transform Your Life
And Your Yard
Decorative outdoor security lighting should be
hard working.
So
make sure yours not only sets the mood but also provides
security and safe passage as well.
The best
security lighting does a good job at addressing all these
functions.
And any landscape lighting project
serious about security should begin with an inventory of the
yard.
You'll be assessing safety and taking note of
the areas you want highlighted.
Safety:
-
- Blind
spots
-
- Uneven
walk ways
-
-
Protruding walls
-
- Obstacles
-
- Abrupt
drop-offs
Use low voltage lights, solar
garden lights and riser lights along pathways
and on stairs.
Make sure to take notice
of changes in grades.
Outdoor lighting fixtures along
pathways also keeps people in areas where you want them.
They'll gravitate to
the light, avoiding dark areas.
Security:
Discourage
buglers who'd rather work under cover of darkness by keeping
the perimeter of your home well-lit.
Install shielded flood lights
under the eves connected to motion sensors or manual switches
you'll tum off and on as needed.
Take this a
step further and install flood lights at the driveway entrance
or other key entry points.
Tree-mounted lights function
well in this way.
Teamed with motion detectors, the
minute you arrive home after dark, the approach to your garage
can be flooded with light.
Consider a similar setup
for the approach to your front and back doors.
If your backyard is
large, station shielded fixtures at spots that are too far away
to be lit by the lights mounted on the house.
Secure areas around tall
plantings and sheds in this same way.
EasyOutdoorDecor Tip: Unless you just
like to climb, don't mount lights more than 10' off the ground.
Bulbs will always need changing.
To achieve
functional and decorative outdoor security lighting, your goal
is twofold:
Extend the use of your
yard into the nighttime hours and make your yard a magical place
that pleases and relaxes guests in an after dark
atmosphere.
